Client Story 8.28.14

When we have the chance, we want to share stories about the clients, their families, and their therapists to remind everyone why we love what we do!

Colleen, a behavior therapist, shared this:

Sometimes when we work with clients, we see progress all at once. Other times new skills come slowly, with a little more every day. For almost six months, I have been working with one of our clients on all kinds of skills, from basic motor skills to communication skills to attending skills. From the beginning, eye contact has been a goal. At first, any attempt to get eye contact lead to crying and turning away. As sessions went on, my client was able to make eye contact when requesting an item. However, getting eye contact spontaneously during play or eye contact that were initiated by the client has been challenging and we’ve made slow progress.

Until last Wednesday.

We were sitting at the table. My client had earned the opportunity to watch a video, and I was writing data, with my face down and my body turned slightly away. Out of nowhere, a hand shot toward my face. When I looked up to try and see what she was reaching for, her face was about 6 inches from mine and she was staring at my eyes. She hadn’t missed a snack or toy and hit my face instead, she intentionally smacked me in the face to get my attention!

It’s so rewarding to see this kind of behavior. We’ve been working so long on eye contact, and she is finally able to make eye contact on her own. We also know that eye contact is a very important prerequisite skill for so many other communication and attending goals. It’s a huge step for my client, and it goes to show how much she’s capable of achieving!
